There is something deeply moving about the early morning in Advent at Our Lady of Ransom. The church, radiantly glistening in candlelight, slowly brightens with the dawn as we gather for the Rorate Caeli Mass, a beautiful tradition in honour of Mary. Its Latin Introit, Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant iustum — “Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain down righteousness” — fills the space with sacred anticipation, connecting us to centuries of prayer and devotion.
The Mass is celebrated by Fr Neil, and the music, led by a small team from Hub churches, lifts our hearts in hymn and chant, perfectly complementing the soft glow of candles and the quiet stillness of the morning. It is a moment to pause, to reflect, and to let the Eternal Light of Christ penetrate our lives as we prepare for His coming.
As one parishioner reflected last year:
The Latin chant, the candlelight, and singing created such a sacred atmosphere. For a few moments I felt truly suspended in prayer, waiting with Mary for the coming of Christ.Parishioner
Families and schoolchildren are especially welcome — come in uniform, enjoy the Mass, and share breakfast afterwards before heading to school or work. It should be possible to catch the 07:28 train to Lewes and London; students at St Richard’s can catch the 07:31 or 07:44 trains still, and there is also plenty of time to get other children to more local Eastbourne schools after the service and breakfast.
It was magical to see the church glowing with candles and to share the quiet peace of prayer together as a family. My children loved it, and we can’t wait to experience it again!Parent of Primary School child
The Rorate Caeli Mass is not just a ritual; it is a spiritual experience, a way to begin the day in peace, prayer, and hope. Don’t miss this extraordinary Advent tradition — a chance to let the Light of Christ illuminate your morning and prepare your heart for Christmas.
Rorate Masses are celebrated this year on Fridays 5, 12 and 19 December at 6:30am at Our Lady of Ransom Church in Eastbourne.
